When our lives are over, 2 CONT please let us meet again so we can be a family up in Heaven, Lord, Amen." 2 CONT MARRIAGE: The couple were married on June 16 1945 in Trainer, PA at Holy Cross 2 CONT Church. 1 NOTE My Father's Master degree was in Electrical Engineering and Management. We were 2 CONT o.k. Financially for those times, my Father had a good job and we all worked and 2 CONT handed in our pay. My Father was in the Army during WW1, I don't really know his 2 CONT part or rank. He never got out of the states during the war years of 1914 thru 2 CONT 1918. 2 CONT The houses on Castor Ave: Moved in the summer of 1935 to 5221 Castor ave. I 2 CONT started 5th grade in St Martin's, we moved across the street to 5227 in 1941 2 CONT where I lived when I finished High School and went into the Marines. That's the 2 CONT house where your Mother lived with Tom till my Father died. Your uncle Don was 2 CONT still there. It had two stories and a 3rd floor attic where Mart and Fr. Tom 2 CONT slept, 3 bedrooms on 2nd floor where Don, Jack, and me slept. Sue had the middle 2 CONT by herself, Mother and Dad in the Front bedroom. One bathroom between Sue's and 2 CONT Front bedroom. Down stairs we had a front enclosed sun porch, then into the 2 CONT Living Room, into the Dinning Room, into a neat small breakfast Room with wall 2 CONT benches to sit, into the Kitchen and it had a garage in the back. Pretty nice 2 CONT neighborhood and nice people such as the Harvey's. Who had Kate, Jane, Julia 2 CONT (all beautiful), Ed, (my buddy) and John, Jim, and Pete, all three became 2 CONT Oblates from North Catholic like Fr Tom. Officially Northeast Catholic High 2 CONT School. We always refer it as North or North Catholic. 2 CONT Have not a clue about my uncles during WW1----Uncle Tom hardly ever saw, Uncle 2 CONT Frank___neat guy, worked for my Dad @@ F.W. Tunnell's in Philly. Great 2 CONT family----Aunt Rose and the kids were Alice, Mary, Raymond, and Phillip. Mary 2 CONT used to baby sit us a lot. We would drive her crazy. Uncle John---He supposedly 2 CONT drank a lot. I remember when I served newspapers in his neighborhood and I would 2 CONT deliver to the various Taprooms, I would run into him, he would run and hide 2 CONT when I came in. He Got divorced and his wife and daughter moved to up state Pa. 2 CONT Aunt Sue Kept in touch with them. I sat in the hospital (with my Mother) and was 2 CONT there when he died. I remember how sick he was, and skinny, you could see right 2 CONT thru his skin to see his bones. It was my 1st close experience with death. He 2 CONT died in 1943. 2 CONT Aunt Regina---(my Godmother) She was very sick all the time, every time we 2 CONT visited she was in bed. She was very good to me. She would send a lot of neat 2 CONT care packages to me when I was overseas her husband was Uncle Jose McGrath, Kids 2 CONT were Mary, James, Paul, Rita, And Dick (our adopted brother) Real close cousins. 2 CONT They all lived with Grand mom Kelley (Very Special Lady) in the Frankford 2 CONT section of Philly. 2 CONT My Mother had sisters Josephine, Helen, Veronica ----Brothers Lawrence and 2 CONT Vince____Aunt Josephine ___I didn't know her she lived in Greensburg. Aunt Helen 2 CONT ----------(I loved her dearly) she lived in Long Island N.Y. (2) great kids -- 2 CONT Helen and Patricia, my very favorite girl cousin. She was so beautiful, she was 2 CONT a year older than me, and she was my 1st crush. When she would visit we would 2 CONT play cards all the time, we were very close. Patty died when she was only 16 2 CONT year old, I was devastated. Aunt Ronnie---who lived in Greensburg, Pa till my 2 CONT Dad died, then she came down to Philly to share an apartment with Mother in the 2 CONT Olney section of Philly. She was very sweet and a great companion for Mother 2 CONT till they both died in their 80's. Mother in 1976, Aunt Ronnie in 1977. I was 2 CONT with Aunt Ronnie and Mother when they died of cancer in the Hospital. Uncle 2 CONT Lawrence----A mystery man. Nobody knows much about him. Uncle Vince_____Great 2 CONT guy, very close to Mother and Dad. He worked very close in the company with Dad 2 CONT for many years. He and his Wife, also named Aunt Ronnie, visited the house a 2 CONT lot. Beautiful people. 2 CONT Birth to 3rd grade: 2 CONT I think I was born in Jefferson Hosp. in Philly. by Dr. McNeil Then again I 2 CONT think I was born @@ home. (5243 N. 13th St.) by Dr. McNeil I have to check out. 2 CONT can't think of one thing they had to say about my infancy/toddler stage. My 2 CONT earliest memory is a brand new little yellow suit I wore and went playing in the 2 CONT woods across the street and climbing a tree and falling off the tree and my 2 CONT Father picking me up and carrying me home and calling Dr McNeil. He checked me 2 CONT out, couldn't find anything wrong and getting hell from my Father for causing 2 CONT such a fuss and ruining my new little yellow suit. I didn't go to a 2 CONT Kindergarten. Catholic Schools didn't have any in those days. Have no idea of 2 CONT 1st grade nun's name. But I do remember she asked my name and when I told her 2 CONT and she said "oh no - not another Kelley". Now does that tell you something 2 CONT about Uncle Mart and Fr. Tom? My first day coming home from school, cutting thru 2 CONT the woods I was jumped by George Eastburn, a 4th grader who lived 4 houses up 2 CONT from us. He had me down and was sitting on top of me. I pulled him down and bit 2 CONT him bad on his face. He let me go and I ran home. I got him good later when I 2 CONT was in the 4th grade after I joined the Feegan Gang. The 1st Sunday Mass at Holy 2 CONT Child Church we assembled down under the Church in the basement before Mass. The 2 CONT classes would go up to Church mass - the 8th grade first on down to 1st. Well, 2 CONT for some reason me and Dorothy Bell missed going up stairs to Mass. I remember 2 CONT we were there for a very long time and didn't know what to do so we just sat 2 CONT there and she taught me songs she knew from Shirley Temple movies. One was: On 2 CONT the Good Ship Lollypop" and the other was one of my all time favorites "On the 2 CONT Isle Of Capri". Now it's getting real late, because it's getting dark and we are 2 CONT still trying to be brave when all of sudden somebody at the top of the stairs 2 CONT yells "is any body down there." I was fine till then, then I lost it, both of us 2 CONT did, we started crying and ran to him yelling," we are, we are". It was a Philly 2 CONT Policeman. They had been looking for us all day, all over Philly and finally 2 CONT thought to check the Church basement. I did not get hell this time, my parents 2 CONT were so glad to find us. Can you imagine what we put them thru? Dorothy was my 2 CONT favorite girl all the way thru Holy Child School till we moved the summer after 2 CONT the 4th grade. I never saw her after that. Nothing special of 2nd and 3rd grade. 2 CONT Don't remember sister's names who taught me. I was playing games in the street 2 CONT like we did in those days. Hand ball, box ball, hide and seek, had skates and 2 CONT skates mobiles made out of orange crates and a slate of wood and a piece of 2 CONT broom handle for steering. Learned a lot of card games, house games. Plenty of 2 CONT roughhouse with my brothers, we had boxing gloves and we would fight a lot. Had 2 CONT a neat little puppy dog who bit me on the nose when I was playing on the floor 2 CONT with him. I bit him back; we got along fine after that. 2 CONT 4th grade _ Now I'm old enough to join The Feegan Gang but you had to get 2 CONT initiated first. You had to run thru and jump over trenches that had big fires 2 CONT burning in them, run thru a gang of older guys who would smack you all the way 2 CONT thru. Then the special trick, a big kid would get behind you and squeeze you 2 CONT under the chest hard till you passed out. If they thought you were faking they 2 CONT would let go and if you were unconscious you would hit the ground hard. Mart 2 CONT thought I was faking and let go and I hit the ground and rolled down the hill. 2 CONT They let me in the gang when I came too. We played in the woods a lot that's 2 CONT where Fr. Tom, me and Jack got caught smoking my Father's cigars by my Mother. 2 CONT She put the butts in front of my Father's dinner plate that nite, he took us 2 CONT down the cellar and made us finish smoking them, we gagged a lot, and he sent us 2 CONT to bed. We never did stop smoking, also in the woods we made tree houses, and in 2 CONT the upper or lower lots we would make snow houses and forts and play Soldiers or 2 CONT Cowboy and Indians. We would climb the trees near the block long row of garages 2 CONT and shimmy out the big branches over the garages and drop down on the garage 2 CONT roofs and play on top of them. I remember playing catch with my Dad, He would 2 CONT sit on the top front step of the house and throw the ball to me and I would toss 2 CONT it back to him. We made slingshots from tree branches shaped in a Y shape, 2 CONT attach big wide rubber bands to it and use small pebbles and shoot birds (mostly 2 CONT Crows) out of trees. Worked off Ice trucks helping to deliver ice to houses for 2 CONT their iceboxes. You call them refrigerators now. We played baseball in the upper 2 CONT lot which we named Somerville field. That's where the Negro teams (Homestead 2 CONT Graves)(also a team would play on mules) would come and play our semi pro teams. 2 CONT Saw some real good baseball. The horse drawn wagons would deliver our milk 2 CONT (Abbots dairy) our bread (Bond and Friehoffers Bakeries). We helped Mother make 2 CONT homemade Ice cream. We sold Magazines, Shoveled snow, cut grass to make money 2 CONT and turn it all in to my Father. We sold penny candy in school to help the Nuns. 2 CONT I mention before that I was born in a house @@ 5th and Duncannon Ave. in the 2 CONT Olney section of Philly. Don't remember a thing about it, moved to Logon Section 2 CONT of Philly before my 1st grade to 5243 N. 13th St. where I lived till we moved 2 CONT that summer after I finished the 4th grade. Our house on 13th Street was a two 2 CONT story with a cellar, coal furnace, living room, dinning room, kitchen, small 2 CONT shed where the Ice box was kept, upstairs had front large bedroom, a middle 2 CONT room, and a back room, and a bathroom. I can't remember any thing about where we 2 CONT all slept. We had a small alley between next door that lead to the back of the 2 CONT house and small yard and back door. It had an open front porch high off the 2 CONT street. With a stonewall. Remember the small picture of the six of us sitting on 2 CONT the wall with our feet dangling and we went back 70 yrs later and tried to 2 CONT duplicate the old photo. We moved the summer of 1935 to St Martin's parish to 2 CONT 5223 Castor Ave where I started the 5th Grade. 2 CONT 4th to 6th grade 2 CONT 4th Grade -- Moved that summer after I finished 4th grade to 5227 Caster Ave 2 CONT house. Had a lot more chores to handle like cutting the lawn, weeding the flower 2 CONT garden, cutting the long hedges surrounding the front, side, and rear of house, 2 CONT and taking out the ashes by the buckets, and sharing in keeping the coal furnace 2 CONT going to heat the house in the winter. We would cut our grass and shovel our 2 CONT snow before we would go out and make money cutting the neighbors grass or 2 CONT shoveling their snow covered walkways, driveways and pavements. In the summer we 2 CONT used to play tire ball, wire ball half (floaters) ball in the street. I broke 2 CONT Babe Ruth's home run record (720) one summer in tire ball With Fr. Tom pitching. 2 CONT It took a lot of games. Tire ball was using a cut up piece (about 5 inch long) 2 CONT of a bicycle tire, and you would pitch it to the batter by flipping it so it 2 CONT would come in to the batter end over end. We had home plate on Granite Street 2 CONT along side of the house and set the distant by using the trees along Granite 2 CONT Street as markers for single, double triples and Castor Ave as a home run. I was 2 CONT the only kid that broke the record. I played football on the Triangle that we 2 CONT used as a practice field and played baseball on a field we made out of a lot 2 CONT along Oxford Ave with home plate @@ the edge of Oxford ave. facing the back row 2 CONT of the houses along Castor Ave. A home run was if you could hit it over the 2 CONT hedges along the alley in back of those houses. A lot of times a home run would 2 CONT bounce and hit a house window and break it, we would pay or fix the broken 2 CONT windows ourselves, so the parents would keep letting us keep playing there. We 2 CONT would box with gloves down the cellar or in the garage' with Martin, Fr. Tom 2 CONT (Jack and Don were too little) and the Harvey boys (Ed, John,), Jack Hatfield, 2 CONT George Seese, Ray Wright, Jack Cavanaugh. Great neighborhood! Jack Hatfield had 2 CONT a pool table in a cellar rec room and he had a bicycle too, nobody had bikes, he 2 CONT used to let me ride his bike and shoot pool in his house. His family liked me. 2 CONT He was one of the few Protestants in the area. He had Epilepsy and I would 2 CONT always carry a clothespin with me so when he would go into a fit I was able to 2 CONT stick the clothespin in his mouth so he wouldn't swallow his tongue and choke to 2 CONT death. In those days Mother didn't want us to play with non-Catholics, so I 2 CONT never told her about Jack Hatfield. One day we were all hanging in front of the 2 CONT Harvey's (They also had 3 beautiful girls (Kate, Julia and - Jane, who your 2 CONT Uncle Mart married before he went overseas and is the mother of all of Uncle 2 CONT Mart's Kids) and Jack was going thru a Epilepsy fit and I was putting the 2 CONT clothes pin in his mouth and stretching him out on the lawn when my Mother 2 CONT happened to come around the corner, coming home from the store and saw what we 2 CONT were doing. She never said not to play with Jack after that. My buddies from 2 CONT school (Tommy Keenan, Pud O'Donnell, Reds McDevitt, Jim Maguire) and I would 2 CONT walk the sewers, which was a little dangerous. I wouldn't tell my brothers that 2 CONT I was doing stuff like that and hopping trucks along the Roosevelt Blvd. to 2 CONT Broad St, sneaking on the Subways, riding them up and downtown all day or hop 2 CONT more trucks to Delaware Ave. in Fish town And then swim in the river. We also 2 CONT thumb rides on the Blvd. to Pennypack Creek or the creek near Sears and go bare 2 CONT ass swimming. And I had better been home before 6:00p.m. for dinner or I didn't 2 CONT get any. We played basketball on Large St. behind Frankford H.S. soccer field. 2 CONT We had a basket on a telephone pole. It was tough street ball, good experience 2 CONT for a kid, guys from high school, and St Joe's and LaSalle College played there, 2 CONT especially Sat. Mornings. I remember guys like Phil Looby from LaSalle College. 2 CONT He was tough. 2 CONT 5th grade 6th grade much the same stuff. Except one disaster in the 6th Grade, 2 CONT Halloween day. We would come home for lunch every day, this day the boys decided 2 CONT to stop by Henneritta and Gabriela Murphy's house on the way back to school, 2 CONT because we knew their father made bathtub gin and wine and brud beer. While some 2 CONT of the boys kept the girls busy up stairs, some of us would sneak down the 2 CONT cellar and hit the booze. My 1st Experience and I snuck too much. I was drunk by 2 CONT the time I got to school, was making a lot of noise in the corridor, the Mother 2 CONT Superior grabbed me and took me in her office and had me pull down my long 2 CONT stockings (We wore knickers in those days) and she began to beat me with a yard 2 CONT stick, waiting for me to cry, she broke two yard sticks and I wouldn't cry, she 2 CONT gave up and sent me back to my classroom, I crawled up the steps to the 2nd 2 CONT floor 6th grade classroom hurting. I sat in the last seat in the 1st isle. I 2 CONT made it and in comes Mother Superior and tells to come up in front of the class, 2 CONT I struggled to the front and read me the riot act in front of all and told them 2 CONT that I was being put back in the 5th grade as punishment. I spent one month in 2 CONT the 5th grade. I learned a hard lesson (Little did I realize that was the start 2 CONT of my alcohol problems) I made a private promise to not get in trouble in school 2 CONT again. I began to study extra and hit the books hard. It paid off, it was the 2 CONT start of a very successful school life. I ended up @@ the end of the 6th grade 2 CONT getting the bronze metal for the highest mark in math. It helped ease things @@ 2 CONT home some. One thing that stands out from those years is coming down each 2 CONT morning to the kitchen and seeing 6 pairs of school shoes all shined and lined 2 CONT up for us to wear to school, and many a morning I would get down stairs early 2 CONT and catch my Mother still scrubbing the floor. My Job by then was to wake up 2 CONT Martin, I'd go to the 3rd floor and stick a broom handle between the stair 2 CONT banister rungs and hit Martin to wake him. He hated that, I made sure I got out 2 CONT of there before he got near the steps. He always came down to the one bathroom 2 CONT mad and would lock the rest of us out till he was done. I used to get Donald to 2 CONT keep knocking on the door, Martin sometimes open the door quick and belt Don, So 2 CONT I had to step in and the fights would start. Then my father would wake up and we 2 CONT were all in trouble. 2 CONT 7th & 8th 2 CONT Mother----A very quiet, good living, church-going person, devout catholic, 2 CONT belong to "The Blessed Virgin Mary Society @@ ST Martin's of Tours Church. Alway 2 CONT quietly helping someone like when my Uncle John was dying in the Incurable 2 CONT Hospital in Philly, Mother would be the one down there visiting him and helping 2 CONT him until his death. She would take me with her @@ times. I remember holding 2 CONT Uncle John's hand when he died and seeing all his veins and bones thru his arms 2 CONT because his skin and flesh had gotten so thin you could see right thru the skin. 2 CONT It was sad. He died a very lonely man. He lost his wife and daughter because of 2 CONT his drinking long before his death. When I delivered the newspapers in his 2 CONT neighborhood (he lived with Grandmother Kelley, Uncle Jose/Aunt Regina and the 2 CONT rest of the McGrath's), we delivered to the Taprooms and I would run into uncle 2 CONT John in them, he would try to hide, but I would see him, I thought he was a good 2 CONT guy, but the drinking got him. Mother was always working hard around the house 2 CONT and the FLOWER BEDS. One of my jobs was to help with the outside work. I would 2 CONT hide a water/garden snake in her flowerbed (I had a boxful during those days) to 2 CONT scare her. She would let out a yell and then I would track the snake down and 2 CONT put it back in my shoebox. I would tease my Mother a lot. I think I told you 2 CONT before how I would sneak in the kitchen when she was making dinner and pull her 2 CONT apron string lose and run out the backdoor real quick and scoot quick in thru 2 CONT the front door before she could see me and she would be yelling out the back 2 CONT "David you get in here and behave". By that time I had quietly snuck back thru 2 CONT the living room, dining room to the kitchen again and was standing behind her 2 CONT and I would scare her again when I would say, "Mother, I'm right here". She was 2 CONT a good sport, with all us boys, Donald would give her fits all the time, even up 2 CONT to her death in the hospital, He was helping push the gurney she was on and 2 CONT yelling, "Lady with a baby, Lady with a baby". She made sure we did all our 2 CONT house/outside chores and kept after us to keep our room and closets clean, 2 CONT stayed after us to do our homework and clean up after meals and do the dishes. 2 CONT She washed and ironed all day with the 6 of us and my Dad. She took very good 2 CONT care of Dad after he had his 1st heart attack in 1938. Mother was a quite a 2 CONT strong person. 2 CONT Dad-- The best, Hard Working, Strong, Stern and yet very fair, would whack you 2 CONT when you needed it. You never talked back to your parents or shame on you. You 2 CONT paid the price. Very kind and fun and would tell neat stories. 2 CONT He and I were very close. I use to sit on the floor in front of his chair in the 2 CONT living room and file his nails while we would talk and he would tell stories and 2 CONT I would tell him stuff. He would make me laugh and he was always pushing you and 2 CONT encouraging you to do more and better. He set a great example to motivate you to 2 CONT plug hard in life so it would pay off. He was good at fixing and building 2 CONT things. He was a master Engineer. He built a bench for Martin to put all his 2 CONT medical alcohol jars of body parts (all labeled) of dead cats which mart would 2 CONT cut open and dissect to help him in his future medical career. My job was to 2 CONT catch stray cats and kill them for Mart to work on. He also built an alter for 2 CONT Fr. Tom to use to say Mass for us down the cellar. Mother made all the vestments 2 CONT Fr. Tom wore, and she would make small wafers to use for communion. We'd all go 2 CONT to mass while Fr. Tom practiced on us. Uncle Jack was the alter boy, Suzanne & I 2 CONT were the Choir, And I forget what Donald did, except laugh a lot during mass. 2 CONT Our Parents did all they could to help us grow up. In our last home, he with the 2 CONT help of us boys, made over our cellar into a Rec Room by paneling the walls, put 2 CONT flooring in, sitting chairs, a dart board, (which I became pretty good @@ 2 CONT shooting). He was active in Philly's Chamber of Commerce. He was F.W Tunnell 2 CONT Co's general manager (Glue & Fertilizer Plant) he brought a lot of our relatives 2 CONT to work with him. Uncle Frank, Uncle Jose McGrath, Uncle Vince Owens, Abby 2 CONT Hoener (our cousin). He was very well liked, I remember his viewing being one of 2 CONT the biggest I ever went to. I remember I couldn't wait to grow up so I could 2 CONT help my Dad and make it easier for him and Mother. Never had the chance to help 2 CONT him, Dad died when I was still in the Marines in 1946, the only consolation I 2 CONT have is I gave him his 1st grandson (our Tom) to share with for 4 months before 2 CONT he died. He doted over him like a grand pop does. He loved your mother so; they 2 CONT had fun together with Tom. My brothers and I talk a lot about our Dad when we're 2 CONT together. We missed out on a lot years when we could of shared stuff and our 2 CONT kids with him. He could have guided us thru our 20's, 30's. We sure could have 2 CONT used his experiences and helpful advice during those years and we could have 2 CONT made life easier for him. We missed him bad. It's a gift to have your parents 2 CONT around when you are older. Families are what make life work. I have always used 2 CONT my Dad as a Motivator and remember him in my nightly prayers. I was a lucky kid 2 CONT to have great parents. 2 CONT 7th & 8th grade 2 CONT 7th Grade-- I started to work hard @@ school and home. I was motivated, did my 2 CONT chores at home diligently, with Fr. Tom sold magazines and had a paper route and 2 CONT turned in the money to my Father because that's what kids did in those days. We 2 CONT were family oriented and wanted to do any thing to help out. We were given 2 CONT allowances by our parents accordingly. Played hard, hung with the older 2 CONT guys so I could get better in baseball, football, and basketball. It helped, and 2 CONT with my gang we walk the big underground sewers, making rolled up newspaper 2 CONT torches to see down there. Had a lot of adventures bumming rides, riding buses, 2 CONT subways, and the elevators all over Philly. 2 CONT Would go swimming in Pennypack Creek, the Delaware River down in Fishtown off 2 CONT the wharfs and (BA) swim @@ the creek behind the big factory on the Roosevelt 2 CONT Blvd. and try to get out of there before they dumped the dye in the creek @@ 5:0 2 CONT pm every nite. And I had better be home in time for dinner or you didn't get 2 CONT any. You were late if you were not in your chair by 6:oopm when my Father sat 2 CONT down. Be late and you were sent to your bedroom with no dinner. (Once in awhile 2 CONT Mother would sneak something to eat up to you.) There were no excuses. WHEN US 2 CONT BOYS WOULD GET IN A HASSLE MY FATHER WOULD SEND US DOWN TO THE CELLAR OR OUT IN 2 CONT THE GARAGE TO SETTLE IT WITH BOXING GLOVES. MARTIN AND I BECAME PRETTY GOOD AT 2 CONT BOXING. WHICH HELPED LATER IN LIFE. Played a lot of Wire ball. Half ball, tire 2 CONT ball (I told you about those games, like when I broke Babe Ruth's Home Run 2 CONT Record). Went to a lot of 8th @@ 7th grade Parties. Life was good. My father had 2 CONT his 1st heart attack and that slowed things down around the house we had to be 2 CONT quiet all the time. 2 CONT Killing cats so Martin could dissect them and bottle and label the parts. Well I 2 CONT would catch the stray cats and bring them home and Mart would try to put them to 2 CONT sleep with Chloroform, sometimes it wouldn't work and I'd have to hit them over 2 CONT the head with a hammer or strangle them. (Somebody had to do it)! 8th Grade --- 2 CONT Sister Borgia -- by far the toughest nun in the school. She took me under her 2 CONT wing and decided I was going to be her prize pupil. (It worked) - At graduation 2 CONT time I won it all ---The Gold Medal for highest average in the whole school 2 CONT (98.6) I think that record still stands @@ St. Martin's. Your cousin Colleen cam 2 CONT close. And your aunt Sue did well too. I remember beating out Teresa Birkenstock 2 CONT and Jim Maguire, which was quite a feat. I also won a scholarship to St. Joseph 2 CONT and LaSalle High Schools. 2 CONT She made me study 3 & 1/2 hrs every day and I had to get my study chart signed 2 CONT by my Father each day verifying I did study 3 & 1/2 hrs. She told me I couldn't 2 CONT mess with girls. I had a girlfriend, Dot Stiegerwald, who lived two blocks above 2 CONT the school on Sanger St and I used to sneak to her house by walking 3 or 4 2 CONT blocks out and around the neighborhood to see her. The next day @@ school Sister 2 CONT Borgia would tell me about it, she had spies working for her. It was a full 2 CONT year. Even @@ the May procession I had to give a prayer speech @@ the Blessed 2 CONT Mother's Statue. I walked with the May Queen (Dot Stiegerwald) which was cool. 2 CONT Great Graduation parties. I even quit smoking during the 8th grade. I was a good 2 CONT Kid. I begged my Father to let me go to Northeast Catholic High where my 2 older 2 CONT brothers were going, even though I had free scholarships to St, Joe's & LaSalle. 2 CONT He said o.k. because I proved I could do well. It was an eventful year in my 2 CONT Life and fulfilling. The summer was wild, went back to smoking and girls and 2 CONT fun for the summer. 2 CONT High School (Freshman/Sophomore) 2 CONT Note: I got my 1st pair of long pants for 8th grade graduation. Boys wore 2 CONT Knickers in my day from 1st grade to 8th. Now we were big time. We had one pair 2 CONT for School, one pair for Church/dress, We still played in our knickers with 2 CONT leather patches sewed over knees. And you changed accordingly, or trouble with 2 CONT parents. 2 CONT Freshman year (Sept.1939 to June 1940)- I was assigned to North Catholic's Annex 2 CONT in Lower Frankford @@ St. Jolican's School. We had tough Oblates of St Frances 2 CONT teachers and a very tough Principal (can't remember name) but I still see his 2 CONT stern face. I played freshman football, had to walk to the main school every day 2 CONT for practice. We had a great team a 7 and 1 record. I played right end. I did 2 CONT pretty well. I beat out Jim Maguire for the spot, Uncle Don says Jim's still mad 2 CONT @@ me. I went out for the basketball team too, got cut on the last cut, very 2 CONT disappointed. Any time in gym when we would play other classes with any of the 2 CONT guys that made the team I would bust my tail extra to show them up. It worked 2 CONT most times. This is when "The Unholy Five " was formed. Dave Kelley, Don St 2 CONT John, Joe Flanagan, Bill Dyer, and Ed Ortlieb. We became close friends, tough, 2 CONT good students and gang forever. I'll tell you more about them guys later. We 2 CONT were all in the college prep classes all thru High School. We had two languages 2 CONT (French/Latin), Algebra, Geometry, Physics, Biology, English, Religion, History, 2 CONT Radio, Science. Awful schedule, no study periods, we all worked hard in School 2 CONT and we had out side jobs too. Freshman year I still sold Magazines and papers. I 2 CONT remember one incident clearly in my freshman year. Because I was going to the 2 CONT Annex and was a little closer to home than Mart or Fr. Tom who were in the Main 2 CONT school @@ Torresdale and Lehigh Ave. I got home earlier. This one afternoon I ge 2 CONT the word that Mart is set to fight another senior over @@ Harberson's Field 2 CONT across from the main school (where all the famous North Catholic fights were 2 CONT Settled). I had to run all the way back down to the main school and be there for 2 CONT my brother. That's what you did in those days, families always stuck together 2 CONT when there was a fight. It turned out to be one of the best fights of that time. 2 CONT It lasted so long I was able to get down there and watch most of it. (It was all 2 CONT over Aunt Jane), I think over the weekend this kid was trying to hit on her and 2 CONT Mart got the word and you didn't mess with anybody's girl. Mart and Aunt Jane 2 CONT were an item since grammar school. I had to fight Mart one time over Jane; it 2 CONT was Julia, her sister, I was hitting on. He was tough. He's the only guy ever, 2 CONT in all the fights I had in life who ever knocked me out. I had a lot of good 2 CONT times with the girls. They were teaching me how to dance around this time. My 2 CONT Father was still not to well, but started back to work by now. Fun summer. 2 CONT Sophomore Year (Sept 1940 to June 1941)- The Unholy Five all were still together 2 CONT in Soph 2, I was playing for the Jr. Varsity football, very tough coaches, many 2 CONT late nights for dinners (Good excuses) because of late practices and many laps 2 CONT in the dark around the tracks to makes us think of our screw ups in practice. 2 CONT Our Varsity coach was Sy Simmindinger and Whitey Marshall for the JV'S. Mr. 2 CONT Marshall became the Varsity coach in my senior year. Tough schedule, we did 2 CONT good. What was neat we had a lot of ST Martin's (my 8th grade class) on the JV's 2 CONT team. Reds McDevitt, Ed Quarry, Jim Maguire, Dave Kelley. 2 CONT Our soph 2 class were the terrors in the gym games and out on the school field 2 CONT in intramural sports. I grew a lot in the summer after freshman year. They 2 CONT kidded me about growing out of my long pants, they were way up my legs. Great 2 CONT school year, very close to my "unholy five" buddies. We still stay in touch. 2 CONT There's only 3 of us left. Neighborhood friends were Hank Houseman, (Hank's 2 CONT older brother graduated from La Salle College that summer and me and Hank Helped 2 CONT Ed memorize the color blind charts so he could join the navy as a pilot) Walt 2 CONT O'Donnell, Duke Whalin, and Reds McDevitt. Soph. Year 2 CONT continued (June 1941) 2 CONT I am continuing my summer after Soph. year. I started smoking and drinking now 2 CONT that I was hanging out with the older guys on the corner too. Guys Like Lloyd, 2 CONT John LeCompte and Reds Snieder. I started out going to the dance clubs with the 2 CONT gang and they were drinking before they got there. I didn't drink in the early 2 CONT summer. I used to take care of the guys who got in fights or got too drunk and 2 CONT would take them home or jump in the middle of their fights. I remember taking 2 CONT John LeCompte home one nite (he was Mart's age) and opened his front enclosed 2 CONT porch door to put him in a chair and got out of there, but before I could his 2 CONT mother opened the living room door and saw John and started yelling at me for 2 CONT getting him drunk. I took off and on the way home decided if I was going to get 2 CONT blamed for getting the older guys drunk I may as well drink myself, so I did the 2 CONT next weekend. I had 2 beers that Friday nite and went to the dance and carry on 2 CONT like I'd seen the older guys, I thought that was what beer did to you, but when 2 CONT I got near my house I straighten up pretty quick. I started drinking on all the 2 CONT weekends. It was party time, but for some reason I wouldn't get drunk. I used to 2 CONT practice Darts down our cellar and became very good at it. I didn't have money 2 CONT for drinking. I worked in Sears Mail order dept. and what money I made I turned 2 CONT in to Dad. He gave me $1:00 to spend each nite. That didn't go far if you drank 2 CONT before you hit the dance halls like "The Spot" or "The Swing Club". We use to go 2 CONT to a Bar in Ridesburg called Butsey's where they had 10 cent shots an 5 cent 2 CONT beers and I would shoot darts against the older men for money and beat them and 2 CONT now had some spending money. It started a new side career. We all out hung on 2 CONT the corner of Merriam Rd and Bridge St. There was a corner store there where 2 CONT they sold milk, bread, candy, potato chips, pretzels and Tasteykakes and other 2 CONT treats, and they had pinball machines too. The owner was a good guy and let us 2 CONT hang on the corner because we spent money in the store. We would all meet there 2 CONT before we would go out at nite. Had plenty of fun with the girls swimming at the 2 CONT pools. The Boulevard pool (on Roosevelt Blvd), The Ware's pool and The Somerton 2 CONT Pool, both a long bus ride to Somerton, Pa. You had a lot of time to talk to the 2 CONT girls on the bus rides. To and from the pools. Played cards sitting on the grass 2 CONT plots dividing the Roosevelt Blvd Lanes on many weekday nights. It was good 2 CONT times. But we were pretty serious kids for our age due to the war in Europe 2 CONT going on with Hitler invading all the countries, and Japan invading China. 2 CONT Junior Year in H.S. Sept. 1941 to June 1942 2 CONT Sept. of 1941 - Back in school, class junior 1---Heavy school schedule. 2 CONT Worked hard @@ school and Home. Worked after school across from our H.S. 2 CONT in a FACTORY THAT MADE tent material for the military. The war IN EUROPE was 2 CONT ESCALATING. Hitler had invaded Poland heading for Russia next, was daily bombing 2 CONT England. Was tied up with Italy and Japan called "The Axis" They were the bad 2 CONT guys. We as kids thought and played soldier a lot and talked about joining up. I 2 CONT was playing football with the "Frankford Yellow Jackets" against the Bridesburg 2 CONT Eagles in Bridesburg on Dec. 7th 1941. At half time we scooted off the field to 2 CONT the corner store for a Pepsi and Tastykake and we heard on the store radio that 2 CONT the Japs had bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. It stirred us up, we pretended the 2 CONT other team were Japs and we beat up on them and won the game. We all got home 2 CONT and that night we met on the corner and decided to join up. On Monday morning, 2 CONT 35 of our neighborhood guys went downtown and joined the Marines. I brought all 2 CONT my papers home to have signed, I was only 16 then and you had to have a parent 2 CONT sign for you to go. My Father wouldn't sign, he said I had to finish H.S. first. 2 CONT We had a big Party at the "Club Morocco" on the Roosevelt Blvd, on Tues. night 2 CONT that week and we all got smashed. I had to fight the twins John and Loy LeCompte 2 CONT that night, we got home around 4:00am by a truck and dumped off in front of each 2 CONT of our homes. I had school that day, I was still drunk and went in school Wed, 2 CONT and got in trouble and was given the choice by our principle to take the pledge 2 CONT to never drink again till I was 21 or bring my parents in. I took the pledge it 2 CONT didn't last long, I went out that Fri. night. I was able to join the V-12 2 CONT program as a Marine officer trainee later - on March 17th, 1943. Xmas Time 2 CONT worked in Post Office Delivering Mail. One Route was working on a mail truck 2 CONT delivering Xmas package to various places, one place was Byeberry Insane Asylum 2 CONT up in Sommerton, up in the far northeast part of Philly. What an experience. 2 CONT Some of the inmates were allowed to walk the grounds, and when you would get off 2 CONT the truck to take the packages up to the front door, they would jump out at you 2 CONT and scare the hell out of you. The walk up to the main door, was bounded on both 2 CONT sides by glass enclosures where more inside inmates would bang on the glass, 2 CONT jump up and down, make faces at you, and other crazy hand signs at you. It kept 2 CONT you on the alert. Summer I worked in Sears Warehouse where we used hand trucks 2 CONT to unload 1000lb bails of various types, & sizes of packed clothes shipped from 2 CONT railroad cars, and truck the bails inside to the mail order section of the 2 CONT warehouse and break the bails open to be delivered up to the mail order floors 2 CONT in the main store. I met and worked with many girls who were a lot older than me 2 CONT - "Interesting"! Weekend nite life was hitting big bars and dance halls where 2 CONT the older girls hung out, places like "The 5 finger Bar" @@ Broad and Lehigh in 2 CONT North Philly, Big bars downtown On 15th St.. The "Continental" on Frankford Ave. 2 CONT We would hit them after I would work the old men in the neighborhood bars and 2 CONT play them for money with darts so I had money to spend on the girls. The whole 2 CONT gang of us @@ North Catholic led a fast life, school, working after school and 2 CONT out every nite drinking, just waiting to go in the service. The war speeded up 2 CONT the pace of living, for everyone. Gave up High School sports, so I could work 2 CONT and make money. Played sandlot football with the Frankford Yellow jackets, 2 CONT basketball with "The Triangle A C" against teams all over Philly and out side 2 CONT Philly. 2 CONT The "Unholy Five" got very close during my Junior and senior years. We were all 2 CONT in the same classes, played intramural sports together, hung out at the dances 2 CONT together. My neighbor gang, we hung on the corner together, went to church 2 CONT together, worked together, played weekend and week nite sports together, drank 2 CONT together, fought the other neighborhood gangs together. Summer swimming @@ the 2 CONT Pools and creeks. Fr Tom had started to drive that year and he would practice on 2 CONT the cinder roads surrounding the factory where my Father worked. One day I was 2 CONT with him in the car @@ the Factory (F. W. Tunnell & Co.) and we were riding 2 CONT around the place and Tom, who was driving dropped his cigarette and told me to 2 CONT hold the steering wheel and was bending down trying to find it and we had to 2 CONT turn a curve in the road, we/I didn't make it. We landed down in a ditch we 2 CONT climbed out of the car and up to the road. We looked towards the factory and my 2 CONT Father was standing there looking at us. That put an end to my getting started 2 CONT to learn how to drive. And curtailed Tom's driving for a while. I never ask my 2 CONT Father to drive after that, it wasn't till 1953 that I went for my driver test 2 CONT (2 wks. before the Twins were born). It was an Eventful summer of 1942. 2 CONT My H. S.Senior Year (Sept.1942 to June 1943) 2 CONT Senior 2 Class @@ "North". It was full schedule the 1st half of the Year. The 2 CONT "Unholy Five" set up a system for us to use thru this year. 2 CONT Each guy @@ test time had a particular subject to study hard on and when we had 2 CONT tests in class, we would pass singles for the answers to each who didn't know 2 CONT the answers, we all did good. We would every Friday @@ 10:15 a.m. cut class, jum 2 CONT the Fence surrounding the school and go in Joe Flanagan's car (parked 2 blocks 2 CONT away) to downtown to the early show @@ the Earle Theatre and catch the movie and 2 CONT The Big Band show, which changed every Friday. Then we would get back to school 2 CONT before the 2:15 p.m. class and the class Absentee reporter would cover for us 2 CONT under threat of a beating. At our 1943 50th class reunion (1993) he (Charlie?) 2 CONT told that story and how he was afraid of us. We all (only 4 of us were left, Joe 2 CONT Flanagan had died) bought him a big double shot of whiskey and had a lot of 2 CONT laughs, and a lot of old stories that day. We all had enough credits to go to 2 CONT college but all we were thinking of is to join up and help fight the war against 2 CONT the Japs and Nazis, which was raging. 2 CONT I went in the V-12 program (March 17th 1943) with Kevin Murray (we were The only 2 CONT 2 who made the Marine Corps). Joe left for the regular Navy, and Don St John, 2 CONT Bill Dyer and Ed Ortlieb all went in the Navy @@ the end of the school year. Ed 2 CONT stayed in and made a career of Naval Service. He became the 1st captain of the 2 CONT 1st nuclear Submarine and served in the Viet Nan war before he retired. We all 2 CONT started a new life. The whole United States was fully involved in the war. My 2 CONT father was an Air raid warden in the neighborhood, as were all of the older men. 2 CONT The woman made care packages for the guys in the service. There was gas ration, 2 CONT cigarette ration, meat and food ration, and nobody bitched, and they and we 2 CONT would do whatever it took to win the war. We also had black markets too. There 2 CONT are always some like that in the world. I told you about the lady who owned the 2 CONT apartment building you Mother and I rented, who was into the black market, and 2 CONT others like her. Before I left for training to be an officer @@ Penn State I was 2 CONT back working @@ Sears Warehouse again and messing with older girls and having a 2 CONT good old time. I bought a Zoot Suit (dark brown) down in South St. where they 2 CONT sold all the cool clothes. My Father flipped but I used my money I scrounged by 2 CONT working and saving. and he just shook his head. It had real wide lapels. On the 2 CONT Waist length finger tip coat. Pants were High waist, 15 in. cuffs, wide knees, 2 CONT Slashed pockets on coat and slacks, every thing but the long chain (didn't want 2 CONT to spend the money) I wore it on my last nite home. And on the "El" coming home 2 CONT after a lot of drinking, I sat there and tore the big lapels off, so much for 2 CONT "Zoot Suits", I had gone to our H.S. senior prom earlier in the year with Alice 2 CONT Gottchell. (She was the Catch of the city, I lucked out.) We had the dance in a 2 CONT big hotel (Ritz Carleton) downtown Philly. I got totaled. I had 3mos. earlier 2 CONT stole a full bottle of whiskey from Dad's liquor cabinet. I snuck down stairs 2 CONT one nite on a social nite when my father had guests and I knew the cabinet was 2 CONT open, and hid it in the bushes outside. The nite I got all dressed up in my Tux 2 CONT and showed my parents how I looked, said goodbye @@ the front door went out and 2 CONT went around the corner and up the back way and found the whiskey bottle and 2 CONT headed out to my prom date's house. Great nite. I made an impression on the 2 CONT Gottchell family that lasted a long time. Alice died last year and a friend from 2 CONT Wilm. who was close to her family went to the funeral in Philly. and he was 2 CONT telling me my name came up and they remember our prom nite and me especially. 2 CONT (I'll tell you why some day). One girl who I worked with @@ Sears were pretty 2 CONT close and when I quit @@ sears I didn't tell her. She found out and that last 2 CONT week before I left there she is knocking at our front door. I saw who it was and 2 CONT said I didn't want to answer the door. My Mother went and invited her in and 2 CONT this girl named Mary was upset I left and didn't say goodbye to her. She told my 2 CONT Mother she was so serious that she wanted to marry me. Now this girl/woman is 22 2 CONT yrs. old and my Mother flipped, seeing that I was only 17. I talked to her for a 2 CONT while and walked her to the bus stop and said goodbye. I never saw her again. I 2 CONT had a neat couple of girls (Dot Steigerwald, Jean Fee) who I said I would write 2 CONT to. I never did. Didn't think it would be right, knowing where I was heading 2 CONT into War. It was a great year and a great life. I said good-bye to everyone. Now 2 CONT it's time to be what I always wanted to be a "United States Marine" "Semper Fi! 2 CONT After High school graduation, I spent from July to Dec. 1943 @@ Penn State with 2 CONT the Marines. They were sending us thru an accelerated course to officer 2 CONT training. It was an 8 hr./day of classes, military and college courses. Out of 2 CONT over 800 seniors of the 1943 graduates from North East Catholic H. S., only 2 CONT Kevin Murray and me were picked for the Marines. It was called the Navy V-12 2 CONT program. There were young guys from all over the U.S. going thru this V-12 2 CONT program. It depended on how much previous college you had for your length of 2 CONT training they gave you. College seniors were pushed thru in 90 days, that where 2 CONT the expression on some officers as "90 Day Wonders" came from. We had 600 2 CONT Marines training with a lot of Army Air Force trainees and 3000 girl students 2 CONT (Terrible Duty - Ha!). When my brother Mart finished all his Army training and 2 CONT was sent overseas to North Africa to fight the Germans, I asked for combat duty, 2 CONT I wasn't going to let Mart fight the war without me helping. They love 2 CONT volunteers who are "Gung Ho". I was, and still am. So overseas I went! 2 CONT We all new our Dad loved us. We didn't kiss and hug in those days, a firm 2 CONT handshake or a pat on the shoulder was very meaningful. He was very affectionate 2 CONT with Mother. They did every thing together. They were very close and happy 2 CONT together. Dad graduated from Carnegie Tech Univ. with a degree in Electrical 2 CONT Engineering and a Master's degree in Management from Duquesne University in 2 CONT Pittsburgh, Pa. Dad was General Mgr. of F.W Tunnell Co. in the Richmond section 2 CONT of Phila. They made Glue and Fertilizer. Yes he made good money in those days. 2 CONT He worked long hrs. and 7 days/week like everyone in those days because the war 2 CONT was on. He was on Phila. Chambers of Commerce board also, which kept him busy. 2 CONT He would come to my games when he could. I was the only one who played High 2 CONT School, and even sandlot sports. He loved sports. He was a college champion in 2 CONT rowing. He would tell some neat stories about the Monongahela River in 2 CONT Pittsburgh area with his buddy G. Gunning. They were in World War I together. He 2 CONT met my Mother in Greensburg, Pa. I don't know any details but your Aunt Sue 2 CONT does. He got this job in Phila. and they got married and moved to Phila. and 2 CONT started our family. Mart was born Sept. 1922. Mother had 6 kids from Sept 1922 2 CONT to Oct 1928 (Don is last). Mother lost a child in 1930. We were living on 13th 2 CONT St then, where we took that picture of the 6 of us on the porch wall, then we 2 CONT moved to the house(s) on Caster Ave, where I lived till I left for the Marines. 2 CONT I was one of the 1st 100 hit and injured (burns on arms and shoulder, left side 2 CONT and a piece of shrapnel in the stomach, nothing compared to Bob Hoopes (my best 2 CONT man @@ my wedding), who almost lost his one leg and a lot of other Marines and 2 CONT Sailors. We lost 6 Marines that day (January 21st, 1945) and many more Sailors. 2 CONT It took one week for us marines to search and find all the dead bodies. It took 2 CONT us a whole week to bury them @@ sea. We played "Taps" for each one as we dropped 2 CONT each into the ocean. I still fill up heavy when "Taps" are played and I still 2 CONT hear "the sound of the Plunk in my head when each body hit the ocean water. It 2 CONT stays with you. 2 CONT I was in an accelerated collage/military training program. Graduated June 1943 2 CONT from High school, then left for Penn State University in July 1943 and was 2 CONT training to be a Marine Corps officer/college degree in an accelerated program. 2 CONT We went to classes / trained 8 hrs. / Day 6 days/wk. Left Penn State Dec. 1943, 2 CONT went thru Parris Island, S.C. for Boot Camp and than in Jan. 1943 on to Sea 2 CONT School in Portsmouth, VA. 2 CONT THEN ON TO THE "TICONDEROGA" the two months before it was commissioned as a 2 CONT 20mm/40mm gunner, made runs on Trinidad as part of training, then thru the 2 CONT Panama Canal to the South Pacific to fight the Japs. Fought in 2 CONT The China Seas and South Pacific on the "T" thru 5 battles with the Japs Till we 2 CONT got hit bad on Jan 21 1945 by two Kamikazes and 2 other bombs. And some near 2 CONT misses, which causes a lot of damage in the lower decks. We were listing badly 2 CONT and had a lot of damage on the superstructure (they call it the island on a 2 CONT carrier.) The got us out of there with the help of destroyers and air fighter 2 CONT cover. This was off the Philippines where we just bombed Luzon and Leyte early 2 CONT that morning. We were sent home to Bremerton, Wash. Naval Yard for repairs. 2 CONT Other jobs on ship were Guard duty, 4hrs. on and 8hrs. off, Ship Captain's 2 CONT orderly, worked maintaining and cleaning my gun battery. 2 CONT Bodies had to be buried @@ Sea or on the local islands within 7 days. In Europe 2 CONT they made gravesites for the dead whatever country you got killed in. You 2 CONT couldn't ship bodies back to the USA in those days. It would take too long to 2 CONT ship bodies back to the USA (they would rot) and no big cargo planes like today. 2 CONT Needed ships and planes in the war zones. Why I mention this is because I was the 2 CONT only one of four children that was, The rest of the children were born at home. 2 CONT My first memory was about the age of 3 1/2 yrs old. We had a first floor 2 CONT apartment on Gaul st. in the Richmond section of Philadelphia. My sister Doris, 2 CONT cousin Gertrude and I all had chicken pox. I was very ill. I can remember being 2 CONT in a crib and my mother had made us mittens so we would not scratch ourselves. 2 CONT Remembering this when my eight children came down with the chicken pox, I did 2 CONT the same thing. I also remember the man who came around with dresses, etc., to 2 CONT sell and wonderful smell and the crisp sound they made (later I realized it was 2 CONT the paper inside the dresses that made the sound). December rolled around and 2 CONT December 13th, my Birthday. There was a small store about a block and a half 2 CONT away. Well, that time of the year it gets dark around 5 o'clock. Doris and 2 CONT Gertrude took me to the store to buy me a present. They left me outside by 2 CONT myself (4 years old) next to a dark alley. When they came out I was soooo 2 CONT Frightened but forgot all the fear when I saw the lovely red Pocketbook they 2 CONT bought me. Then Christmas came and I had asked for a Red Fire Engine that you 2 CONT could ride in (Tomboy that I was). Well.... I did get a fire Engine but it was a 2 CONT small one with a seat on top and that you pushed around (I remember being so 2 CONT disappointed). Doris and I received these huge Dolls, My Doll was two heads 2 CONT taller than me. Gertrude received two such Dolls from her mother and father (who 2 CONT were separated). Gertrude lived with us because her mother worked and lived at a 2 CONT country club that was way out in the country. This was during the Depression. My 2 CONT Father earned 17 dollars a week, my mother was a top notch waitress at the 2 CONT Benjamin Franklin Hotel and brought home $90.00 a week. So our family never felt 2 CONT any hardships. I only had my Doll two days and what happened I was carrying the 2 CONT doll down the steps outside and because the doll was sooo big I tripped on its 2 CONT legs and crashed to the pavement. I wasn't hurt because I landed right on top of 2 CONT the doll, but the doll wasn't as lucky as me, she ended up with a broken head. 2 CONT Gertrude gave me one of her Dolls. We were all very Happy! Before I was five yrs 2 CONT old, we moved around the corner and across the street on Cambrea st. to a house. 2 CONT On the corner was a grocery store. I can recall going to with a small list(I 2 CONT always received a piece of candy). My mother charged and paid it once a week. So 2 CONT many memories there! For Christmas, Doris and I received large, beautiful and 2 CONT expensive doll coaches. We were always ladies in our starch dresses and bows in 2 CONT our hair; walking our dolls in those expensive coaches. My father had a band ( 2 CONT he played banjo). We had a piano down in the basement and about two nights a 2 CONT week his band came over to practice. Well, it was like having a party twice a 2 CONT week. All the young adults would come over and dance and have a ball. It was 2 CONT also during Prohibition and my father made his own beer and rootbeer. My father 2 CONT was extremely intelligent. He only went to the 9th grade but graduated by taking 2 CONT correspondence courses. He also hooked the mike to the radio and the kids would 2 CONT listen to him over the radio. On Christmas Eve all the young adults were over 2 CONT and having a great time and Doris and I could not sleep. There was a grate in 2 CONT the bathroom floor so we could watch them. We must have fallen asleep on the 2 CONT floor because when we woke up we were back in our beds. Now it was time for us 2 CONT to move to the country. I was in the first grade. We moved to Newtown Square on 2 CONT a farm. Doris and I stayed at my Grandmother Meyer's until my parents moved all 2 CONT of our furniture. The house was heated by a big black stove in the kitchen that 2 CONT burned coal. There was a Pot Belly stove in the small living room next to the 2 CONT kitchen. The large living room was shut off in the winter because it was to 2 CONT large to heat. We had electricity on the first floor but not upstairs. At night 2 CONT my mother would light a kerosene lamp and take us upstairs. In the mourning she 2 CONT would wrap us up in blankets and carry us down to the warm Kitchen, a great big 2 CONT room with a table that ran full length of the room. There was also a pump that 2 CONT Doris and I had to prime and pump the water. My father taught my mother how to 2 CONT raise chickens. This young women was raised in New York city. There were about 2 CONT 150 chickens. There was a rooster that had been a "blue ribbon winner", but 2 CONT Doris and I would go into the Hen house to collect eggs and the rooster would 2 CONT attack us. My mother got so mad one day, she grabbed that Blue Ribbon rooster 2 CONT and chopped its head off. Next we moved to Broomall. This house was a beautiful 2 CONT large home. In this lovely home my brother Harry was born.We moved again to 2 CONT Flanarch Hills. These homes were semiattached. Our next move was to Blue bell, 2 CONT PA. Another great country home.Sooo again we moved on back to city to Richmond, 2 CONT Philadelphia. There was a play ground across the street and we went to the 2 CONT movies twice a week. About the time I graduated from 8th grade , we moved to 2 CONT Tranace, PA. My Mother left our Father due to his infidelity with a women and 2 CONT she changed her name back to McMullen. We moved again to Broad street and 2 CONT Alligany, a 3rd floor apartment. We hung out a with group of boys from North 2 CONT East Catholic High. We did not date these boys but we went everywhere together. 2 CONT On Sunday my mother worked all day, so we had the boys over for dinner. We were 2 CONT busy cooking and had the radio on for music when they broke in and announced 2 CONT that Pearl Harbor had been attacked by Japan and within six months everyone of 2 CONT the boys were in the service. We started dating shortly after that but the boys 2 CONT started to get younger and younger. Two of the boys , Harry and Bob Tobin went 2 CONT to Virginia College to become officers. They flunked out and went to boot camp 2 CONT training together. Bob and I wrote wonderfully, crazy letters. He would address 2 CONT my letter as Meyer jr.. We had so much fun writing. I never really dated Bob 2 CONT Tobin and I always got him dates with my girlfriends. He would break their 2 CONT hearts. He wrote that he was coming home on leave and then would go over 2 CONT seas(pacific). So Doris and I threw a big party for him. During the party the 2 CONT girls put their names in a hat and the boys would pick out a name. The names 2 CONT picked would then become their partner on a treasure hunt. There were two cars 2 CONT and twenty people. One of the boys we had invited had a twin sister , who was 2 CONT crossed eyed. He said he would not come to the party unless she was invited and 2 CONT of course, I said yes.Bob was the most handsome one there and had the most 2 CONT wonderful personality! Guess who's name he picked. Your right again, the poor , 2 CONT little crossed eyed girl. Bob treated her as if she was the most beautiful girl 2 CONT there. Well, I'll tell you, I really fell in love with him at that point. Later 2 CONT back at the apartment, Bob and I went into the living room to sit and watch the 2 CONT fire. He took out a poem that he had written for me, declaring his love for me. 2 CONT Before he left he said " we were not to write to one another as we had been 2 CONT doing because we were to young to be in love and so on and so on". I felt he had 2 CONT done this because before he had come home, Walt had warned Bob about me, that he 2 CONT walked where angels feared to tread. I never wrote Bob. Later he dropped me a so 2 CONT called note and asked me to write, but I wouldn't was angry and felt I had been 2 CONT made a fool of by him, so I never again wrote.Later I went to a church dance. 2 CONT Who did I run into but Bob Tobin and the crowd. He wanted me to go on a hay ride 2 CONT with him and the whole gang on Saturday night. I told him I was going steady and 2 CONT I couldn't. He pleaded with me to go with him. He said he was going overseas and 2 CONT was not coming back. I laughed in his face and said, "come on Bob, you can do 2 CONT better than that. Try to be a little more original" and I walked off the dance 2 CONT floor. I was so upset the next day because I knew I really loved him. After that 2 CONT I moved to Glenolden, PA. and as soon as I was settled in, I called Bob's mom 2 CONT for his address. She said he was on his way to the west coast and when she got 2 CONT his address she would give it to me. I had this weird dream that night. I was at 2 CONT a fire hall dance and everyone was dancing and having a great time. Bob was 2 CONT sitting on a folding chair against the wall and just watching everyone. Now, if 2 CONT you knew Bob you would realize how strange that was. He was always the life of 2 CONT the party and always right in the middle of everything. I walked over to him and 2 CONT said" what is wrong Bob, come on and get into the fun" he answered" No, I'll sit 2 CONT and watch. The next day, Doris overheard some girls at church saying "did you 2 CONT here about Bob Tobin getting killed on the way to the West coast". Well, at that 2 CONT point Doris past out on the church steps. The story we got later was the troop 2 CONT train was traveling through the desert and every once in a while it would stop 2 CONT to refuel, all the boys would get out to get a breath of fresh air. The sun was 2 CONT so hot they would climb under the train for shade. The train would blow its horn 2 CONT so the boys could get back into the train. Walt was with Bob when the whistle 2 CONT blew, but Bob did not get out in time and was cut in halve right in front of 2 CONT Walt's eyes. Walt never did go overseas, because he had a nervous breakdown. 2 CONT Doris, my friend Ellen and I went to see him laid out, I took one look at that 2 CONT handsome young man and I said to myself" that's not Bob", for Bob was Life 2 CONT itself. His mother said that all Bob ever talked about were the Meyer Girls and 2 CONT that we meant more to him then anyone. That was the story of my great love! I 2 CONT went into mourning for six months. The rest of Marion's Life story can be found 2 CONT in her Marriage notes. Included is at least one story about each of her ten 2 CONT children. 1 NOTE The couple were married on June 16 1945 in Trainer, PA at Holy Cross Church. 2 CONT They met each other on April 6 1945 at a party when Dave was home for a thirty 2 CONT day leave from the US Marines during World War 2. 1 NOTE [NF001] Marion telling her story; 2 CONT At the time of the party mentioned above my sister Doris and I were sharing an 2 CONT Apartment with a friend. We usually had steak and wine on Saturday Nights and I 2 CONT was saying how much I did not want to go to the party. I was to go ahead, you 2 CONT may meet your future husband, so I went and I did! That was the night I met 2 CONT Dave, your father. He was so handsome in his Marine uniform and those dancing 2 CONT Irish eyes! How could I resist him. So we married about four months later, 2 CONT during the war that is the way it happened. Then my babies started coming! My 2 CONT first pregnancy, I was going to the Naval Hospital for my first check up. They 2 CONT had just opened up the Maternity section, so I went there for my first 2 CONT "internal". When I first got there I had to talk to the Doctor. Well, I walked 2 CONT in to meet this handsome , young Naval Officer in full uniform. I got ready for 2 CONT the internal and the nurse told me to sit up on the table and I sat on the table 2 CONT and put my hands in stirrups!!(do you believe it?) The nurse asked me, is this 2 CONT your first internal? When I shook my head yes, she put me in the proper 2 CONT position. When the Doctor came in, I closed my eyes and never opened them until 2 CONT the nurse said " you can open your eyes, the doctor has left". After that they 2 CONT scheduled me with an elderly Doctor. When Tom was born, he was the first red 2 CONT headed baby born in the Naval Hospital and the nurses took him all around the 2 CONT Hospital showing him to all the servicemen. Do You Believe it? When Kathy was 2 CONT born we had just moved into a new home and we had a big Christening party., 150 2 CONT people came and went during the course of the day. She had enough dresses, all 2 CONT different sizes, to last up until her 3rd Birthday. She use to hang on my legs 2 CONT and when I wanted to walk I would have to drag her with me. Tom was crazy about 2 CONT her and let her get away with anything. I would put her in her playpen in her 2 CONT beautiful starch dress and bows and tie her hair up so they would not call her a 2 CONT boy. Then came number Three, WOW! So many stories I could tell you about 2 CONT Maureen, I could fill a book. She was funny Bad. I would tell Tom and Kathy, who 2 CONT were both so good, not to laugh at her and they would run out of the room and 2 CONT giggle. Then came Danny, Beautiful, Adorable, Dan. He threw Temper Tantrums that 2 CONT could even last up to three hours. I never raised my voice to him. I would give 2 CONT a tipped bath and make him comfortable. Then I would put him in his crib; 2 CONT leaving the door open of our ranch house. He would never let me hold him or love 2 CONT him, until he was seven years old. One day, he came home from school, I went to 2 CONT grab him just to hug him; he started to fight me and I said " I don't care , I 2 CONT love you, If I want to, I'll hug you". He settled down and let me love him. 2 CONT Mickey was born a year later. My favorite description of Mickey is he was to 2 CONT good for his own good. As long as he was in the same room with me, he was happy. 2 CONT By the time of Mickey's first Birthday, he was a head taller than Danny. My 2 CONT mother would get furious with me, but I would explain to her, he has got to 2 CONT learn to stand up for his rights; better here in his own home, than out on the 2 CONT street. I don't think he learned that yet! Candy was born one year after Mickey. 2 CONT Candy was the sweetest little girl! Everything you wanted in a little girl! When 2 CONT she was one year old there was a parade in the neighborhood. So we fixed up a 2 CONT float and had all the brothers and sisters walk her. She won the most Beautiful 2 CONT Baby Prize. Her brothers and sisters were so proud. Then I was pregnant for the 2 CONT 7th time!! I was 61/2 moths pregnant and I was going to the Hospital for a check 2 CONT up. I took Kathy with me and told her I was sure the Doctors would tell me I was 2 CONT to have two Babes. She waited in the hall for me while I was examined. The 2 CONT Doctor said there was only one Baby. I said, " Doctor there are two Babies". 2 CONT Bonnie was first and I heard the doctor say, there must be another Baby, Look 2 CONT how small this one is, When Connie came out, I opened my eyes and said " You'll 2 CONT listen to me next time,Doctor". He was my Aunt Gertrude's friend and she said it 2 CONT was his favorite story to tell over coctails. So Kathy got her two Babies. They 2 CONT were Beautiful! Eight years went by and then Jim came along, so many 2 CONT stories. When I came home from the Hospital, The whole neighborhood of kids met 2 CONT our car two blocks away shouting!! He was spoiled by everyone. When he was 2 CONT naked, he would break away from his sisters who were trying to dry him and would 2 CONT have to chase him all over the house. He was a little Devil! You could just see 2 CONT his eyes dancing. He's another one I could write a whole book about. Then came 2 CONT Jack, 11/2 years later. I was carrying him when your father and I were really 2 CONT breaking up and when he was an infant. He would cry in his sleep and talk baby 2 CONT talk. So I moved into he and Jim's room. They both had their own cribs. I slept 2 CONT on a cot, so when Jack would cry in his sleep, I could be beside him to comfort 2 CONT him. My favorite story about Jack is, When he was in first grade, he did 2 CONT something outrageous, (I don't even remember what it was, but it had to be 2 CONT pretty bad)because he was an angel growing up. You could not spoil him. But I 2 CONT pulled him into the Bedroom and pulled down his little pants and spanked his 2 CONT bare behind over my knee. Then I stood him up, he had tears rolling down his 2 CONT precious face and I said to him " Now do you know why Mom Spanked you?" He said 2 CONT with tears in his voice "Because you want me to grow up to be nice Man". WOW! 2 CONT How can you miss with a kid like that? Now he has his own baby boy, who is just 2 CONT as good as his father. I am so happy for Jack. He deserves that Baby. My Story 2 CONT about Kathy: 2 CONT When I was nine years old, I lived in Kennsington, Philadelphia. I went to the 2 CONT movies every Saturday afternoon;11 cents was all it cost. I went to see the most 2 CONT beautiful love story, it was called"Withering Heights". If you have never seen 2 CONT it , the girls name was Kathy. If you ever get the chance , see it or get the 2 CONT book from the library, you will agree that it is the most beautiful Love story 2 CONT ever. When I walked out of the theater, I made up my mind that my first 2 CONT daughter's name would be Kathy. My dear Kathy, that is how it came to be your 2 CONT name. Over the years I NEVER forgot that movie. So there wasn't any hesitation 2 CONT of what your name would be when you were born. When I was pregnant for my first 2 CONT baby, my sister Aileen was living with me. When she would go to bed, I would 2 CONT work on this huge doll; it must have been as tall as a three year old. I made it 2 CONT with black pigtails and a lovely three piece suit and blouse; and it had black 2 CONT paten leather shoes and the jacket I embroidered the name Kathy. 1 NOTE So here I am retired. It's Saturday night and on Channel 24 they play all "Big 2 CONT Band Music", How much I loved it. As the music plays, all my memories of the 2 CONT past years flow. I am surprised I can remember 95% of all the words and haven't 2 CONT missed a beat. What a lovely way to spend an evening. That's my Life. The life 2 CONT of Marion Loretta Kelley. 1 NOTE "The Big Dog Under The Wagon" 2 CONT Marion L. Kelley [version] 2 CONT Come wife says good old farmer Gray, put on your things tis market day, and 2 CONT we'll be off to the nearest town, we'll be back before the sun goes down. Spot, 2 CONT Umm, no we'll leave old Spot behind. Now Spotty barked and Spotty whined and 2 CONT soon made up his doggish mind, to follow under the wagon. Away they went at good 2 CONT round pace, and joy came into the farmers face, poor Spot, he did want to come, 2 CONT but he'll guard the barn and guard the cotton and keep the cattle out of the 2 CONT lot. I'm not so sure of that! Said Spot, "THE BIG DOG UNDER THE WAGON" The 2 CONT farmer all produce sold, got his pay in yellow gold. He tarted home through the 2 CONT lonely forest, HARK! A robber sprang from behind a tree, your money or your 2 CONT life, said he! The moon was up, but he did not see, "THE BIG DOG UNDER THE 2 CONT WAGON" Now Spot neared barked and Spot neared whined, but he quickly caught the 2 CONT thief behind and pulled him down the marley gate, and tore his coat and tore his 2 CONT shirt! The robber uttered not a sound, while hands and feet the farmer bound, 2 CONT and tumbled him into the wagon. And now, our Hero grand and gay, a silver collar 2 CONT he wears today, among his friends and among his foes, he follows on his horney 2 CONT toes! ( noted for selling lots of milk, bread and eggs) My wife Cissy 2 CONT worked for me and that was a big mistake. A typical day when I used to sell 600 2 CONT gallons of milk a week. I had old fashion walkin cooler with wooden floor. When 2 CONT I was taking the milk crates off the hugh milk truck ( 48 gallons of milk on 2 CONT dolly) 2 CONT I had to push into the walk in cooler. The wooden floor had a dip in the floor 2 CONT and as the milk crates started coming down on me, I tried to save it and then 2 CONT realized that all 48 gallons were going to crush me as they fell. I let out a 2 CONT major curse word and as the milk fell down on the floor and splattered all over 2 CONT me and hit the front windows where a customer was. My wife Cissy came running 2 CONT back to see me drenched in milk. After she saw that I was ok, she refused to go 2 CONT out and serve the customers because I used to many curse words and she was 2 CONT embarresed. I told her I was the Boss and she had to go out as I was covered in 2 CONT milk and she still refused, so I went out there drenced in milk and served thse 2 CONT customers. How's that for Milk and Egg on your face. We laugh all the way to the 2 CONT end of the night and forever more. 2 CONT Dan Kelley's Family 2 CONT I first saw Sissy at a Elsemere Dance and officialy met her at Corpus Cristy 2 CONT church. After my two children and my 2 CONT divorce, I went back to college to finsh my degree in Business Adminstration at 2 CONT Widner University while I was working as a contract adminstrator at an 2 CONT Enigineering Firm. I was bored with just doing accounting work and found a job 2 CONT with a Non Profit, Social Service Mental Health organizantion as the Business 2 CONT Manager. Working as a Business Manager for a Social Service was a perfect job 2 CONT for me because it brought out the logical part of my personality but allowed me 2 CONT to work for a organization which help people in need. This brought out the part 2 CONT of my personality which needed to help those in need. 1 NOTE [NI008] After over six years with this organization I decided to move to Silver 2 CONT Spring, Maryland in the D.C. area for another mental health organization as the 2 CONT Director of Administration. My oldest daughter Stephanie could not move down 2 CONT with me because she as been with the same gymnastic school since she was four 2 CONT and on their team since she was eight. Joseph 2 CONT became highly upset when he saw that the dog pound, if you will, was trying to 2 CONT capture this black dog. The window was open, so Joseph hollered, "leave the dog 2 CONT alone". Needless to say, Joseph was sent to the principal's office. When 2 CONT Joseph came home, he begged of me to take him to the SPCA, to rescue the black 2 CONT dog. This child can charm anyone; so off we went. Yes, the black dog was there; 2 CONT however, right next to it was my dream dog. I have wanted this dog, ever since 2 CONT I was a little girl. It was so cute, that even Joseph was easily persuaded to 2 CONT give up the notion of taking the black dog home. 2 CONT My pup was a golden cocker spaniel. We had to wait five days, just in case 2 CONT someone claimed him. 2 CONT We had a problem though, fifteen other people wanted him also. So, when the day 2 CONT arrived that his new owner could adopt him, I took off work. I was the first 2 CONT one there to pick him up. That was the claiming ticket, to be #1. The doors 2 CONT opened at 10am, I was let in. Soon afterward approximately six other people 2 CONT arrived. Sitting there, very relaxed, I filled out the papers. Other people 2 CONT were there as well, I didn't care; I was in my own happy world, knowing my dream 2 CONT dog was 2 CONT going home with me. All of a sudden, the adoption lady stated that I was the 2 CONT second choice; that the older gentleman across the room would be the cocker 2 CONT spaniels new owner. I was feeling like a lost puppy myself. I hadn't ever 2 CONT fallen in love with an animal at first sight like I did this one. I walked out 2 CONT of the SPCA, not able to talk. The older gentleman followed me and with great 2 CONT hesitation gave me my golden cocker spaniel. He let me adopt him. This older 2 CONT gentleman will never be forgotten. 2 CONT Five months later, Joseph calls me up from his MomMom Blevins' home and tells me 2 CONT that she has a cocker spaniel, golden/white. Very small. Joseph was sure that I 2 CONT would fall in love with this pup; I was not. No pup could ever replace my 2 CONT "Shadow", which has followed me around for five months. Shadow, my pup seemed to 2 CONT need a friend during the day; and this new pup was kept outside all day; it also 2 CONT had ticks. So, I called a groomer and told Joseph to bring it home. Now, 2 CONT "Shadow" isn't lonely and "Cotton" isn't cold and ticky. Since May, Shadow who 2 CONT is 1 1/2 yrs. old has put on extra weight; he is a large cocker spaniel. 2 CONT Cotton, is 3 yrs old, according to the vet; and she is very, very small. Cotton 2 CONT was gaining weight and getting chubby in the backside, like Shadow. We did not 2 CONT have to be concerned about Cotton getting pregnant, because Shadow was spaded. 2 CONT The vet said, Cotton may have been spaded before MomMom found her; we cannot 2 CONT tell right now; but that we should keep an eye on her to see if she goes in 2 CONT heat. If that is the case, then we need to bring her back to get spaded. Cotton 2 CONT has gained a lot of weight, but has not gone in heat. Joseph and I arrived home 2 CONT at 9;30pm from a bookstore that we had been in for three hours, 7 1/2 weeks 2 CONT after getting our Cotton from MomMom. What did we find when we arrived home? We 2 CONT found two little tiny, newborn pups that Cotton delivered. We were in awe. 2 CONT Joseph told me that she looked pregnant about two weeks prior. I told him, "no 2 CONT way ", because Shadow was spaded and Cotton never left Shadow's side when they 2 CONT went out to play. Mom was wrong! 2 CONT That night, we stayed up till 12am, when we felt all puppies were delivered. 2 CONT Little Cotton delivered, six; however, only four survived. Gee! Shadow's 2 CONT family grew really quick! All four pups have been claimed though, we'll enjoy 2 CONT them while they're here. What a neat experience! 2 CONT A NEAT, FUZZY JASON STORY 2 CONT Once a week, for 8 weeks a dozen children would come over to Jason's house to 2 CONT practice for THE CHRISTMAS SHOW. Jason's four best friends, three cousins, and 2 CONT his friends' 2 CONT cousins. Jason was nine years old and the others were in the same age range. 2 CONT The day of the show, we cleared all the furniture out of the living room and 2 CONT filled it with 35 chairs, which were borrowed from St. Matthews. We had a room 2 CONT for refreshments and a stage room. We bought a 2 CONT beautiful, red, silky curtain for the stageroom. Everyone sang so beautiful. 2 CONT Andrea Kelley was Mary and of course my Jason was Joseph; they sang, Away In A 2 CONT Manager. What a lasting memory that is for me, (Mom). All went well. All 35 2 CONT seats were filled and the children had a great time. Everyone went home. Uncle 2 CONT Jack came over later that night. It was ten o'clock. I sent Jason to bed. 2 CONT Uncle Jack went upstairs to the bathroom and decided to peak in on his favorite 2 CONT nephew. When he opened the door, he found Jason with a flash light, reading a 2 CONT book. Jason was and still is so intelligent. He and Uncle Jack began to have a 2 CONT big brother talk, so to speak; though Jack is only ten years older than Jason. 2 CONT Jason said, very sincerely, "Uncle Jack", every night I want to read, I turn the 2 CONT flash light on alot, I think I am a read-aholic. Jason was so good, what an 2 CONT angel, but boy - oh- boy could he sleep! Must have been all that reading the 2 CONT night before. 2 CONT SPECIAL FAMILY MEMORIES 2 CONT JASON, went to Fl, Disney World, Chicago and Boston. Had a 3 foot, chocolate 2 CONT Easter bunny at six years old. Came home from North Caroline with a swollen 2 CONT eye, from a bee sting at 8 years old. Loved and played baseball and soccer like 2 CONT a young pro. He had real gift of logic to any sport he played. Jason went to 2 CONT Temple University for some of his college, and at 22 fell in love with his 2 CONT beautiful Greta . Jason takes his brother Joseph to the pro games and movies and 2 CONT is a really good brother. Jason is the family computerwhiz. JOSEPH has been to 2 CONT FL, Disney World, Boston & Sturbridge, MA, Williamsburg, Virginia, Lake George, 2 CONT New York, The Empire State Bldg., and Plymouth, MA, (Plymouth Rock). 2 CONT Joseph has made the All-stars baseball team, three years in a row. Was the 2 CONT third pitcher in one of the games and saved the team from humiliation. Joseph 2 CONT also was on the championship team of his basketball league. He wants to be a 2 CONT writer. GOOD LUCK! 2 CONT LARRY BLEVINS AND BONNIE KELLEY - Our sweetest day was when we got married and 2 CONT when I told Larry that I was pregnant for Jason, he said, "He was happy and 2 CONT proud". When Joseph was 2 CONT announced to be born, we all knew that Joseph was the whole family's bundle of 2 CONT love. Both of our sons were made from love. 2 CONT GARY MICHAEL AND BONNIE KELLEY - While Gary and I were on our honeymoon, in 2 CONT Switzerland we literally went window shopping because all the shops were closed. 2 CONT It was a beautiful, warm evening. I spotted the doll of my dreams. It was a 2 CONT precious, Swiss Boy with the most beautiful Swiss eyes. I fell in love with it. 2 CONT The tag read $65. I knew this was a large amount so I didn't ask for it. My 2 CONT new husband saw how excited I was and said, "in the morning we will come back to 2 CONT purchase it; after all we only go to Switzerland once in our lives." I told 2 CONT everyone on the tour with us about this great doll the next day and expressed 2 CONT how I couldn't wait to show them. We went back to purchase it and discovered 2 CONT that the sweater on the doll was $65.00 and the doll was ONLY $750.00. Needless 2 CONT to say, we had to leave the doll in the window and admit to everyone that we 2 CONT couldn't take it back to Delaware with us. No wonder I fell in love with it! 2 CONT CHRISTMAS IS CELEBRATED EVERY CHRISTMAS EVE & NOT A CHRISTMAS HAS GONE BY 2 CONT WITHOUT CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES BEING MADE & BIRTHDAYS--EVERYONE IS SPOILED 1 FAMS @F8@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I10@ INDI 1 NAME Connie Ann /Kelley/ 2 GIVN Connie Ann 2 SURN Kelley 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 13 OCT 1953 2 PLAC Pennsylvania 1 NOTE OCCU: Owns and operates Childrens Day Care Center(PEEWEE Daycare) 1 NOTE RELI: Catholic 1 NOTE COMM: Is a twin sister with Bonnie Kelley 1 NOTE COMM: Renewed vows again on oyr 20th weding anniversary at Sacred Heart Church 2 CONT in Wilm 1 NOTE Connie is a graduate from Henry C. From memory and family stories, I've realized I was given a lot of 2 CONT attention as a child. Because of this love and attention, I became the person I 2 CONT am today. Along with my brothers and sisters influence, I was greatly impacted 2 CONT by my Mother. At the age of six my parents separated. My brother Jack and I went 2 CONT with Mom and the rest went with Dad, except Tom. Tom, the oldest, was in the 2 CONT AirForce at the time. At some time or another growing up, most of the kids came 2 CONT to live with Mom, Jack and I for short stays. My earliest memories are of The 2 CONT big 3 story house we lived in on 8th and Jackson street in the inner city of 2 CONT Wilmington. This house was very tall and there were four bed rooms as I 2 CONT remember. Bonnie and Connie (the twins) and Candy Lived in one room on the third 2 CONT floor. Tom, Mickey and Danny's room was across from them. On the second floor 2 CONT was Kathy and Maureen's room as well as Mom and Dad's room. Jack and I had a 2 CONT small room right off from Mom and Dads room. There was a sand box in the back 2 CONT yard and a closed in glass foyer in the front of the house. It was this glass 2 CONT foyer that I'll carry with me the rest of my life. As I remember it, I was about 2 CONT four years old and was playing "Bat man and Robin" with my brother Jack (the 2 CONT youngest). I threw my arm out to slap a virtual bad guy and put it through a 2 CONT glass pane window in the foyer. I still have that stitched up scar today on my 2 CONT right hand.(Boys will be Boys). Mom, Jack and I moved into a really big 2 CONT apartment up the street from Jackson St. to Vanburen Street. I really liked this 2 CONT place and the next door neighbors. We moved from downtown in 1969 to get away 2 CONT from the Racial rioting that was tearing down our city. The National Guard was 2 CONT called in and stayed an entire year. This was the longest federal occupation of 2 CONT a U.S. city since the Civil War. We moved into an apartment complex that became 2 CONT the central point of my childhood. What I mean by this is I had my best 2 CONT experiences as a child in this neighborhood. After moving in there, Jack and I 2 CONT (ages 6 and 8) made friends fast; both female and male alike. We formed a close 2 CONT nit group of friends that has never been duplicated since. We moved again when I 2 CONT was 13 to a neighborhood closer to our school. We lived in an apartment next to 2 CONT my adult age sisters, Kathleen and Candace(Candy). They were a big help to me, 2 CONT especially Candace. I went into Conrad High school. The whole time we were 2 CONT moving around town, Dad and the Big eight as they were called (the first eight 2 CONT kids) were living in Elsmere. A small town outside of the city limits. I spent 2 CONT many weekends and summer vacations there with Dad and the big eight. My sister 2 CONT Bonnie spent a lot of time with me and Jack when we went there; Taking us to the 2 CONT park and reading us stories. She was a good sister who gave much of her time. I 2 CONT liked that house and had many friends in that Neighborhood as well. We always 2 CONT (Jack and I) had two Christmas' and two Easters' a year, and felt lots of Love 2 CONT from that home as well. I had two homes growing up and felt very fortunate 2 CONT becuase of it. Unlike other Kids that came from broken homes, I never felt 2 CONT broken, but actually fortunate to have two homes and so many people who loved 2 CONT and encouraged me. I received much of my confidence from this situation and I am 2 CONT very grateful to my Dad and Brothers and Sisters. But especially my Mother, who 2 CONT sacrificed her life for Jack and I, and was a very loving, giving, and 2 CONT supportive Mother. Some say she spoiled us, but I don't see it that way. I see 2 CONT it as a job well done by someone who cared more about her kids than she did 2 CONT anything else. She did what she thought was best for us and had the courage and 2 CONT tenacity to follow through with her plans. She is why I am who I am and I miss 2 CONT her very much. During High School I played fall, winter and spring sports. In 2 CONT High School I dated a lot. I was popular and had the best beer keg parties 2 CONT around. I always kept them under control. After High school I attended College 2 CONT at the University of Delaware into my Junior year where I dropped out and went 2 CONT to night school for Heating and Air Conditioning. During my years at the 2 CONT University of Delaware I joined the Army National Guard to help pay for College. 2 CONT It was a 6 year commitment. I worked with HVAC contractors while I apprenticed 2 CONT for the trade and after 4 yrs of night school I received my Journeyman's Papers 2 CONT for HVAC Technician. I used this to get a better job at the Dupont Institute as 2 CONT an HVAC technician. While I was there I went back to College and got my Degree 2 CONT in Mechanical Engineering. After 10 yrs there, and at age 33, I landed a Job 2 CONT with "Marriott Management Services" in Engineering, traveling around the 2 CONT Continent with the Company. I traveled for almost 4 years before tiring of it 2 CONT and decided to take advantage of the Web Site Design skills I acquired on my own 2 CONT and was developing for several years with many different created web sites, 2 CONT including this one. If I was going to quit the road, I was going to make the 2 CONT tough transition from Engineering into the Information Technology field. I then 2 CONT decided to go full time into my own Internet Services company providing web site 2 CONT design, hosting and e-commerce consulting services. At the time of this writing, 2 CONT I am presently 39 years young and can't wait for my next new challenge. 1 NOTE Jim Kelley 2 CONT Kelley Designs 2 CONT Designing eBusiness Solutions 2 CONT 302-292-6924 2 CONT info@@kelleydesigns.com 2 CONT www.kelleydesigns.com 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I12@ INDI 1 NAME John /Kelley/ 2 GIVN John 2 SURN Kelley 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 FEB 1963 2 PLAC Wilmington,Delaware 1 NOTE OCCU: USPS(US POSTAL CLERK) 1 NOTE RELI: Catholic 1 NOTE COMM: Education-12yrs + 2yrs College at the University of Delaware. 1 NOTE COMM: Medical History-Broken Ancle and Hernia operation(both in 1993) 1 NOTE _FA1: 2 CONT PLAC 1455 Spruce ave. I loved her dearly. My father and I have become very close 2 CONT since my children have been born. I grew up mostly with my Mother. and Brother 2 CONT Jim. Though Jim and I fought all the time growing up, and sometimes still do, we 2 CONT are very close and I know I would miss him more than anyone if he was not 2 CONT around. I love and care for all my brothers and sisters dearly and individually. 2 CONT I spent the first few years on 8th and Jackson st.. I have only vague memories 2 CONT of these days. My parents separated and my mother, Jim and I temporarily moved 2 CONT in an apartment with my sisters Maureen and Kathy. on 8th and VanBuren st.. A 2 CONT block up from Jackson St. in downtown Wilmington. Still vague memories. Only a 2 CONT few months later we moved into an apartment on the corner of 9th and VanBuren. 2 CONT My Memory begins to kick in here. We had lived in this apartment during the 2 CONT period of Martin Luther King's Death. Racial tension was everywhere, even in the 2 CONT classroom of a five year old's Kindergarten. I was the only white child in my 2 CONT class. The only friend who would befriend me was a Puerto Rican child, who barely 2 CONT spoke English. I honestly thought that this was normal and somewhat accepted it. 2 CONT Although the school was on the other end of the block of my house, I couldn't 2 CONT make it home ,to often, without getting beat up. Again I thought this was normal. 2 CONT Finally one day, Somehow my Mother found out and told my Big Brother, Jim, who 2 CONT was only one and halve years older than me but twice my size, to walk me home 2 CONT after school. Well, he caught one of the Bullies picking on me and pounded him 2 CONT and a couple of his friends so bad that I never had a problem making it home 2 CONT again. Racial tensions got so bad my Mother had to move out of the City.We moved 2 CONT into an apartment complex called Alban Park right outside of the city and lived 2 CONT there for six years. I really enjoyed these years. I made the greatest friends 2 CONT and had some of my greatest experiences during this time. I still have one of 2 CONT those friends, Daniel Neff. I am sure we will always be friends. My Mother used 2 CONT to call him her eleventh child. When I was twelve Mom , Jim and I moved into a 2 CONT tiny apartment above a bakery directly across from my school, Richardson Park. I 2 CONT really liked this school. It was small, but included Kindergarten through Ninth 2 CONT grade. I really enjoyed playing sports there;baseball, basketball and soccer. It 2 CONT seemed like the same group of boys, my friends, were on every team together. We 2 CONT did pretty well on some of these sports for such a small school. We had allot of 2 CONT pride in the Richardson Park Eagles. The Apartment on the other hand wasn't so 2 CONT great. At this time of my life I became aware of status. I was very embarrassed 2 CONT with our little tiny apartment on top of the Bakery. Most of my friends lived in 2 CONT suburban houses. I lived through the experience and grew from it. During my 2 CONT ninth grade year we moved to Glenville, DE. We rented a small ranch house on a 2 CONT concrete slab. It was beautiful to us! A house with a front and back yard. 2 CONT Though it took me a while to meet new friends, I soon did, but I mainly 2 CONT maintained my friendship with my friends from Richardson Park where I finished 2 CONT ninth grade. Although I was living out of the school district. My Big Brother 2 CONT Jim would drive me to school and back that year. In High school, Wilmington 2 CONT High, I immediately became pretty popular. This was directly due to my Brother 2 CONT Jim's popularity. He took me under his wing brought me through the social 2 CONT barriers. My problem was maybe a little to social. I was in all the college prep 2 CONT courses and maintained just above a "C" average through three years without 2 CONT taking a book home. This I believed was OK. I realized different when I went to 2 CONT college and was well under prepared. I did enjoy my social life in high school. 2 CONT I played basketball in tenth grade, but my best sport was soccer which I played 2 CONT all through high school. I probably would have played baseball, but the social 2 CONT life and the after school jobs kept me from doing so. I needed to keep up with 2 CONT the social life. As I said, I began college at the University of Delaware 2 CONT unprepared, so I struggled through my classes. The challenge was somewhat 2 CONT enjoyable, though. High school was never much a challenge at Wilmington 2 CONT High.Again, I enjoyed the social life of college. I also seemed to have a need 2 CONT to work to much in college. By my second year of college,I often wondered if 2 CONT this was right for me, about this time a job opportunity at the Post Office was 2 CONT offered to me. My Mother worked there for twenty years. The money sounded to 2 CONT good to turn down. I was going to take the job for a year, buy a house, rent out 2 CONT the extra rooms, quit, get a part time job and go back to school. I bought the 2 CONT house, 23 6th ave in Browntown. I was twenty one yrs old. I rented out the 2 CONT rooms, but I never quit my Job. I got used to the solid income. This is a 2 CONT decision I never regretted, but often wonder what my life would be if I'd gone 2 CONT back to school. When I was 25, I settled down with my beautiful bride, Robin 2 CONT Fox. Life together was rocky from the start. Though in love we moved at 2 CONT different speeds. Mine a little to fast, hers a little to slow. We, in a short 2 CONT period of time, had two beautiful children, bought a new house, kept the old one, 2 CONT worked on both and tried to start a vending business. Mostly my Ideas and 2 CONT probably to much at once. Our marriage only lasted four years. We have maintained 2 CONT a good relationship and it has shown in two healthy children. My pride and joy. 2 CONT I spend as much time as possible with these little guys and truly enjoy this 2 CONT more than anything else in my life. I now understand how my mother felt. I wish 2 CONT she could be here today to feel it again with my children;though sometimes I 2 CONT think she does. I loved my mother so much. It was easy, because of how much she 2 CONT loved us. She would do anything for her children. She sacrificed her whole life 2 CONT for us and only now can I fully appreciate that. I used to believe her life was 2 CONT so miserable; she had little life outside her ten children and she seemed to 2 CONT always be sick,I now believe that she lived her life as she wanted and enjoyed 2 CONT so much of it. I always loved my father dearly, but honestly only became real 2 CONT close to him shortly after my kids were born. We immediately gained a common 2 CONT love of life. We are so close now and he has become a major part of my family's 2 CONT life. I have yet to mention other than Jim the rest of my relationships with my 2 CONT brothers and sisters. I was the youngest of ten kids. There was a seven year gap 2 CONT between the twins and Jim.(Two babies died in that period). Tom, the oldest, 2 CONT Other than when he was in the Airforce Tom lived with me until he was married. 2 CONT He often had the lucky job of baby-sitting and Jim and I often got on his 2 CONT nerves, But he was very patient with us and was a good brother. The next child, 2 CONT Kathy, was my emotional support growing up and she accepted this role freely. 2 CONT Maureen, the next in line, married young and our relationship became strong when 2 CONT I reached the age to baby-sit for her kids. Chris, her oldest, became like a 2 CONT little brother to me. Mareen and I have formed a common parental bond. The next 2 CONT in line is Danny. He was always around growing up. He always found time in his 2 CONT busy schedule to help Jim and I. His influence helped me into college. Mickey 2 CONT had moved away when we were still pretty young. Our visits together were always 2 CONT enjoyable. He and I have become allot closer over the years and we now realize 2 CONT how much we are alike.Candice lived with us for most of the period after our 2 CONT parents separated. She to had to baby-sit me and Jim. She helped Mom raise us. 2 CONT Bonnie, the 2 minute older twin, helped me and Jim allot growing up and was 2 CONT always there for advice. She would do anything for us when we were growing up. 2 CONT The other twin connie, had little patients for us as children but our 2 CONT relationship began to grow as we all got older. I have had some of my best times 2 CONT and best conversations with Connie and appreciate her emotional strength. Jim 2 CONT and I were like most brothers;close to the same age. We fought constantly around 2 CONT the house, but outside the home we ultimately looked after each other. Jim and I 2 CONT are still very close and still sometimes fight. He is my best friend and think 2 CONT I'M stuck with that the rest of my life. 2 CONT Childhood Story: 2 CONT This story is not my favorite but one that has had a major impact on my life. I 2 CONT was about six or seven years old and playing hide and go seek in my fathers 2 CONT basement in Vilone village. My brother, Jim, went upstairs to count. I decided 2 CONT to hide in the unused unplugged refrigerator. Jim went to use the bathroom and 2 CONT evidently forgot we were playing. Within a short period of time, I decided to 2 CONT try to get out. It didn't work. I panicked. After what seemed like forever of 2 CONT banging and yelling, I gave up. I really thought that this was it. Somehow my 2 CONT father just felt that something wasn't right and for no other reason than 2 CONT instinct, he walked downstairs. Of course, when there, he could hear me. The 2 CONT memory of seeing his face and the feeling of being held by him is and always 2 CONT will be impacted in my mind. 1 NOTE _FA2: 2 CONT DATE Mar 1992 2 CONT PLAC Wilmington, DE 1 NOTE MARRIAGE: The two met at Bernies Tavern in Wilmigton, Delaware through 2 CONT friends. They were married at Limestone Presbyterian Church near Pike Creek, DE. 2 CONT They Honeymooned at Paradise Island in the Bahamas.
